Online video has become a major driver in American pop-culture, and it flows both ways. Increasingly individuals are creating content for the web and elevating themselves to mainstream fame.

The fact that Britney’s VMA performance led MTV.com their highest day of traffic ever, and the fact that distraught Britney superfan Chris Crocker’s YouTube video received national media coverage is worth considering. Crocker last night made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

If that wasn’t enough to get tabloids foaming at the mouth, Kanye West was caught in an angry backstage tirade after being shutout for a second straight year, and vowing to boycott MTV for exploiting Britney when she wasn’t ready to come back.

And some are using online video to make the obvious point: this is what the country is focused on?
