Some Updated Live Earth Numbers
MSN released updated figures for Live Earth since last weekend, and they are very impressive. More people viewed the concert online than on Television.
- 237,000 Peak simultaneous streams
- 8 million unique viewers
- 15 million total streams
MSN claims this makes it the most watched entertainment event in online history, and 8 million uniques is a pretty strong number.
Because the concert took place over a 24 hour period, the simultaneous number (during Madonna’s performance in London) was bound to be far lower than total uniques but is still very respectable.

In comparison, CBS March Madness on Demand coverage of the 2006 NCAA tournament delivered 268,000 peak concurrent streams. Akamai served over 400,000 simultaneous streams across their network during that time.
A NASA release claims the highest number of simultaneous streams that I have seen: 433,000 simultaneous viewers for a shuttle launch in 2005. This appears to be the record, and who am I to question NASA.
