Quick Dispatch From CES

If you listen to the cabbies, the recession is on here in Vegas, attendance at this year’s Consumer Electronics show is disturbingly low the way they tell it. But that’s not the story when you walk into the central Las Vegas convention center. The convention floor is packed, and there’s no shortage of impressive technology.

First off, WiMAX. It works, and it seems to work well - I was seeing consistent download speeds of 6Mbps down and over 1Mbps upload throughout LVCC, if it works on a citywide scale as Portland will hopefully prove, it should change the way we access data on the road and offer more options for richer mobile media experiences, especially in the video realm.

Thanks to Intel’s Atom processor this year’s netbooks are smaller lighter and more powerful - cool to consider the potential of some of these devices, when you combine WiMax with a high-powered, extremely small computer you can do some very powerful things. And ultra-thin screens, they’re expensive, but add them to the mix and your mobile video experience is about to get a lot better.

More to come.
