From Streaming Media West

Streaming Media West has some early thumbs up for the panels from our OVW spies out there.

So far, our ears tell us that “TV’s Last Gasp” was a great panel, with 150-200 attendees, including speakers from Fox, AP, CurrentTV and an industry analyst.

Recent numbers showing that TV viewership might actually be on the decline continues to motivate traditional media companies to move their content into the online world. This brave new world of instant access and ultra-niche content has frustrated some companies but also given unexpected new areas of growth to others. Find out how traditional media is using the power of online video to access new audiences and engage with current users. Hear from our panelists about specific tactics and strategies they are using to leverage the power of new media. What does the future of online interaction look like as TV takes its last breath?

Good discussion on where things are headed. Example: Serie B soccer in Italy isnt on tv – only on internet and mobile – and people watch avidly. But TV’s not going away. For one thing, the infrastructure wont support it. If the Colt /Patriots game (ed: yeah, Pats!) were only online, Indianapolis and Boston’s internet networks would have been demolished.

They also showed a chart on the growth of online video of local TV stations.
1999: 15%
2002: 22%
2005: 55%
2007: 87%

Thats some serious growth, with more on the way.
