On the off chance you haven’t already seen this, here’s a great clip making the rounds on the Web. Its David Lynch ranting on why watching movies on an iPhone (or any other portable phone or device) just isn’t the same as being in the theaters. He’s right, of course, but you can’t take a movie theater onto a plane with you.
This may be one of the funniest videos online that I’ve ever seen. CoupleDoingIt.com (110% truth: its NOT porn) is, “a free educational website devoted to the education and demystification of the modern swinger lifestyle.” Other than the general subject matter, and one use of the “F-word,” it’s pretty much safe for work. No nudity.
For those of you who are nostalgic for cheesy 80’s anthems-for-a-cause like USA for Africa’s “We Are The World” and BandAid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” be sure to check out Mozilla’s viral campaign for Firefox, complete with a scrolling bar of statistics on the bottom.
Just ahead of the Iowa caucus and heading into the New Hampshire primary, Barely Political’s Omama Girl, Amber Lee, launched a new video, this time with a Rocky Meets the Matrix storyline. Since its debut on January 2nd, the video has nearly 1 million views.
Another vid for the holiday season gaining some viral traction. Added on Dec 1., the video of “Chinese Food on Christmas” has more than 193,000 views and counting. And not a minute too soon. I don’t think I could take another season full of Adam Sandler’s Chanukah song again. This version is a “music video” of the song, which Walker originally performed and posted last year, gathering more than half a million views.
More than 440,00 views in less than a week, and over 500 comments make this video for “Here Comes Another Bubble” from The Richter Scales quite the heatseeker.
Whether or not you think there’s another web bubble going on, this video is pretty damn funny.
Maybe its all the talk about product and brand integration in the online advertising space that made this scene of ‘30 Rock’ make me laugh a little harder than normal. Maybe it was just funnier in general. But the Verizon Wireless integration into last week’s episode (which I watched on DVR but could have watched the whole episode on Hulu) made me think about product integration and how it will ultimately work online.
Nothing new here, of course. Mike Myers lampooned product integration in movies in his Austin Powers movies 10 years ago.
Not a day goes by where I haven’t been asked about product integration lately. But as we consider issues like shifting ad dollars from television into online, do we need to worry about ad agencies having to compete with real talent agencies like William Morris as well? They’ve got a digital department too. Who leads the strategy here? Are media planners working hand in hand with talent agents, or is this the next “silo” to be broken down? Who is better equipped to handle these online dollars? Advertising agencies or our Hollywood power lunching counterparts?
But I digress. Maybe Tina Fey and the writers of 30 Rock just have a knack for phone jokes. They had their fingers on the pulse of mobile phone content development last season. Weren’t you thinking about your mobile video ad strategy when this episode ran?
By the way, I made my own clips. I didn’t want to make readers click away to watch the full 1:30 minute clip on NBC’s site, and Hulu’s video trimming functionality sucks. Please don’t sue me. Seems like fair use to me, but I guess we’ll find out.
Just in case, though, here’s my Hulu version. Which, by the way, plays the whole episode after you see the :20 second long clip that I wanted you to see.
Have a busy week at work or on the road and look at all the things you miss. Variety’s blog has been hosting a “Funniest Web Videos” awards. While the voting is already closed, you can visit their site and check out the finalists.
Could this be an Office Space for the web 2.0 set, or is “COO” Michael Golan just annoying everyone?
Several months ago, Slikstr started following me on twitter, Apparently they’re following a lot of other people also because that seems to be where most of their buzz was generated. Their claim of first round funding from a private equity source for $2 million helped earn them credibility.
A few weeks later Golan (whatever his real name was) managed to get an interview with BBC Radio, which tipped afterward seemed to realize their mistake in taking them seriously:
We’ll be interviewing them about their business plans Web 2.0 corporate satire on Monday. It should be a good learn.
(thanks Dean!)
And every so often I find myself watching a new video. Most of the time these videos are just irritating, like being in a conversation with someone you really dislike but can’t find a way to get out of. But I have to admit their most recent video is pretty funny.
Above: Rob’s first day @ Slikstr
“New hire” Rob Dimeno plays the role of the new guy in a startup, met at the door, camera rolling he is asked to fill out paperwork and simultaneously given the role of handling HR in addition to “Creative Director of Interactive Outreach.”
He spends the rest of the day trying to get in touch with Joel, who in an earlier video announced while smoking a joint on the roof that he was going to LA to investigate opening a satellite office.
Asked where Joel is, Golan responds: “Joel is out of town on business, didn’t you see the YouTube video?” Check it out, this is actually starting to get funny.
Thanks again to OVW reader Christopher Rogers for tipping us to this one. Abrad2345 has posted a new fake Rudy 2008 ad, slamming the dems across the board - Hillary, Obama…even Dennis Kucinich and even Oprah.
