I love a good party. Any celebration that calls for excessive imbibing (but not driving!), I’m all for, like Cinco de Mayo, New Years, St. Patty’s Day, and milestone birthdays.

And so it is with great joy that I offer my most sincere birthday wishes to Captain Morgan on his 375 (ish)th birthday. Break Media, the premier entertainment site for men, is also joining in on the celebration with a series of branded content videos to mark the momentous occasion.

The Break Creative Lab, the creative content shop within Break Media led by Jonathan Small, SVP Editorial and Creative Lab, worked in partnership with Captain Morgan to develop and execute a series specifically designed to resonate with guys. I think it does.

Very cool, indeed. Replacing traditional Coke vending machines with a tricked out “happiness machine.” Not sure I’d use the term “doses” in the description, but thats a little nit picky.

I’ve long espoused the use of online video as a quintessential tool for aspiring film makers to build buzz, raise funds and show off their work to get real jobs. So I’ll take the opportunity to post a just-released trailer for a new gangster flick, “Weequahic,” by my longtime friend, Jamie Ruddy.

Jamie is an up-and-coming film maker with a knack for writing some seriously scary horror scripts. As a student at NYU, she won the Austin Film Festival’s Student Short Film Award for an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Genesis and Catastrophe.

Thoughts on the YouTube Value Prop

The YouTube Biz Blog today has a post boasting of the rev gen potential of YouTube using the JK Wedding Video which has received so much attention over the past week, as a case in point.

YouTube has placed “click-to-buy” overlays on the video which is to the music of Chris Brown’s Forver. YouTube claims that the video’s popularity has helped the single to reach number 4 and 3 on the iTunes and Amazon.com best seller lists respectively more than a year after its release.

So it’s great for YouTube, iTunes, Amazon, and the record label. But what about for the content creators? Is free distribution a fair value exchange, I’m not so sure. Your Thoughts?

NCAA March Madness on Demand The Tourney Starts Today. Watch every game from the NCAA® Championship from the opening rounds to the final buzzer beater.

Ben Adds: A few technical things to look out for, CBS is making this available for free for the fourth year in a row. Video is delivered using Silverlight and a new high quality option will be available.

CBS has also added an iPhone app though you will have to pay for it. While the cost of delivering this content is not cheap, it’s a good example of premium online content that can be successfully monetized through advertising. Of course it helps that CBS has a strong sales force already selling ads on TV – the online portion is just icing.

Hulu’s Superbowl Ad Widget

Kudos to Hulu for having (in my opinion) the best ad of this year’s Superbowl. What happened to the Miller Lite 1 second spots? I didn’t see any of them.

In addition to reigning supremem on the ad side, Hulu has put together a flexibile widget for people to embed on their own blogs to watch the Superbowl ads. Vertical or horizontal orientation, you choose top show 2, 3, or 4 thumbnails. Nice touch. Still awkward to have one advertiser sponsoring someone else’s ad, but at leat the pre-rolls are of the 3 second variety.

I also liked seeing Hyudai’s online video effort with the “EditYourOwn.com” mash-up, using Adobe’s Premier Express. Unfortunately, users who headed over to the site following the commercial were greeted with an endless buffering of the pre-loader.

Online Video War: Seafood Edition

This may be my new favorite online video campaign. Mainly because I’ve never, ever considered eating in a Red Lobster, let alone considered that they may not be the lowest restaurant on the lobster ladder. Yes, even lower than McDonald’s McLobster Roll (only available in New England, so trust me on this one). I take my lobster seriously – New England roots and all. Only my 6 year old niece thinks they’re good. But she’s 6 and lives in Tucson, so what does she know? But I digress.

Captain D’s, a 40 year old chain, decided to do their own lobster version of the Pepsi Challenge. And like all good companies, they made sure to put the video up on YouTube (hey Captain, there’s more than YouTube, but again, I digress). Apparently they caught the attention of Red Lobster, and earned themselves a cease and desist notice. Did they cease and desist? Hell No! They made another online video!

Hey Captain – Send me a T-shirt!!

Update: I had a chance to speak with reps from Captain D’s earlier today. It was great to hear how absolutely organic this project was. Plain ol’ good use of online video. They shot the video, with a paid actor and minimal production crew, for under $10k in less than a day. Quick edits and posted it up on their site. Then they emailed their Captain’s Club members, and that was that. 8,000 visitors in the first 12 hours or so, and those t-shirts were gone in under 2 hours. Nice job, Captain.
