HD World: NBC Olympics Keynote

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

David Neal, Executive Producer, NBC Sports & EVP, NBC Olympics just gave the keynote here at HD World and discussed NBC preparations for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

His keynote was mixed between trailers for the Olympics projected in HD and surround sound which can also be viewed on the NBC Olympics site.

These will be the first ever Olympics produced 100% in high definition and while Neal spent nearly all his time on the power of HD, he also noted the changes that have taken place in digital content delivery.

“We have to increasingly work to make our medium appealing” he said. HD partnered with the compelling storytelling will do that.

By the numbers:
- 35 sports 302 events in 37 venues.
- 10,500 athletes.
- Over 1,000 cameras including all host broadcast cameras in HD.
- All broadcast in 1080i with 5.1 stereo surround
- 60 mobile units.
- 12,000 accredited broadcasters from 200 countries.
- Cumulative audience of 4 Billion viewers,
- 1 B for opening ceremonies.

Every venue will be cabled for fiber and every camera down to the bulls eye camera for archery will be HD. NBC will produce 1 signal in both standards, producing for 4×3 center cut. All deliverables coming from one very high end source.

The bottom line is that NBC believes the Olympics will drive HD adoption and the future of broadcast TV. “Once you see it, especially once you see sports, in HD you’re hooked” said Neal. “You can gain traction with HD. At NBC Sports we’re all in.”

CFO Out at Roo

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Lou Kerner, CFO of online video solutions provider Roo Media has left the company. The online video technology provider has struggled with financials despite having a global footprint and distribution deals with News Corp’s Times of London and The Sun, Fox News Channel, Australian versions of Fox Interactive Media sites myspace.com and IGN.com, VNU, mtvU, Universal Music UK, financial sites including Entrepreneur.com and TheStreet.com, Lycos UK and many more.

Earnings disappointments were problematic long before Mr. Kerner’s arrival, however. Mr. Kerner was named to the post in December 2006 after serving as President and COO of Bolt Media.

In late June, Roo named three new top executives including a GM/EVP, Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Content Officer. Despite only being there for six months, I’d consider this a normal case of out with the old, in with the new.

Ed Note: As previously mentioned, I own Roo Media stock (RGRP.OB)

Joost “Hates My 30s”

Monday, July 9th, 2007

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Joost has secured a deal with VH-1 to premiere the entire season of “I Hate My 30s” ten days before it debuts on TV.

No surprise that Joost has been able to secure such a deal with Viacom. Before joining Joost, Executive Vice President, Global Advertising and General Manager, North America, David Clarke, served as vice president for MTV Networks Global Marketing Partnerships, where he oversaw advertising sales and integrated marketing for MTV Networks International’s MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon branded businesses across the globe.

And while we’re on the subject of Joost…

Events Next Week

Friday, July 6th, 2007

For those of you in New York City, there are some great events coming up next week.

On Monday, the NY Video 2.0 Meetup will be held at Columbia B-school. Dan Rayburn, of Streaming Media fame, will be moderating a panel that explores new video formats.

Similar to the panel held at Dan’s Streaming Media East conference, the discussion will focus on “What’s Next for Online Video Advertising?”

As online video advertising evolves in the coming months and years, technologies and business models will naturally extend beyond those in practice today. New means of creating ad revenue are on the horizon from options like sponsorships in the form of product placement and brand “overlays,” pre-roll teasers that encourage post-roll clicks and more effective use of in-banner video. This discussion will focus on how these new business models and ad formats can be applied and we will also discuss if anyone is making money with online video advertising and the going CPM rate for video ads.

The Panelists:

Kevin J. McGurn, VP, Advertising, NBCU; Jeff Minsky, Director of Digital Media, OMD; Robert Victor, Product Manager, Emerging Media, DoubleClick; and Jed Savage, EVP, Strategy and Development, ScanScout.

Tuesday, the New York Tech Meetup will take over the Great Hall at Cooper Union for networking and new product demos. Already more than 400 people have RSVPd for NY Tech.

And Wednesday, Widgetcon will be held at Tribeca Cinemas. This is an all day invite-only event that I personally will not be requesting an invite to. While it sounds cool (in that geeky techie sense of the word), if I had to choose one place in Manhattan I least want to spend a day-long conference, Tribeca cinemas and their ancient, poorly-padded theater seats is it. I’m sure other techie bloggers will blog it.

If you’ll be at any of these, drop us a line.

Technorati Brains Bailing

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Forbes.com’s Rachel Rosmarin reports that Technorati’s two top thinkers, their CTO, Tantek Celik, and VP of Engineering, Adam Hertz, are leaving. Chief Executive Dave Sifry is also looking for his replacement, according to the story.

Sifry in a blog post earlier this week gently reminded readers that Technorati is hiring, and apologized for leaving out another departure, Liz Dunn, who is moving to Will Farell’s Funny or Die.

We have previously covered the outcry over Technorati’s downtime. The departure of some of their smartest people (and bloggers) is not a good sign for a company so depended upon by the blogosphere and so plagued by technical issues.
