Beyonce Spill Fuels Copyright Debate
While most videos of the Beyonce tumble at an Orlando concert have been removed by YouTube at the request of Sony BMG, new ones - like this - are continuously added so there’s still something for everyone to see.
But fans on message boards are irked at the label for asking the video sharing site to remove the clip. Despite every ticket having “No Video Cameras Allowed” printed on it, PR is quickly turning against the move to protect Beyonce’s image. It appears to be another example of end uses not understanding the rights of copyright holders. While cell phone video of a concert - particularly with a buzz worthy fumble - doesn’t resonate as protected content the same way as a copied album on a P2P network might, the issue is the same. It is a shame, though, that “The Man” will always be seen as the big, greedy corporation. In this case, however, I think the fans have it right.
Interestingly, while SonyBMG has managed to get most of the original videos removed from YouTube, CNN , thanks to their iReporters - ran it as a news story and still has two versions of the clip available on their site here and here.
So when does it go from being a protected concert clip to a news story where a rights holder loses their rights?

This is ridiculus ok it must have been embarrassing to have that fall all over the internet, but beyonce and her camp have made it worse by telling people not to put it on you tube and then now strong arming you tube to take it off its site, when you start telling people what they can or cant do it will backfire on your face, look at what ushers trying to do write now, artists should never try to control fans and the media unless its illegal, the action b’s camp is taking is over the top as usual because they want to preserve her image as perfect, they’ve made this incident even bigger than it ever was by their reaction. fools

Very true….. if beyonce didnt even say anything after the concert this would have just been a thing of the moment and people wouldn’t have beeon to bothered…. at the end of the day she got straight back up and she should be proud of that instead of wasting time trying to hide something that cant be helped……. I also notice something here……… how come when Michelle and Kelly fell down BMG did not do the same thing for them??

Beyonce took a bad spill but i still have to give her, her props. She is a good singer. I had a chance to see her in philly at ladies first tour. Missy elliott came out first and did her thing, then Alisha Keys came out and rip the stage apart, at least my girl B came out but her performance was not good at all. I think she sounds a mess live. For one they always have her voice echoing and I don’t know, her live performance just wasn’t good. Don’t get it twisted she is my girl cause she sings from her heart and from her experiences, I just think right now Jay-z got her head all F@$*@# up and she in going threw it. MY opinion is that her entire B-day album is about her and Jay and that’s why I love her so much is because before anything else she is a women, a strong black women and she is definitly getting her paper. So B keep your head up, your the talk right now but soon someone else will be in your shoes and You will have the chance to laugh. I’m glad she is ok and didn’t have any major injuries but come on B you have to admit that SH@# was funny as hell.

Let’s face it, accidents happen everyday. All that matters is that Beyonce is ok. I was a fan but this incident has left a sour taste in my mouth. Big Deal! You fell and the world saw it. We also saw how you got right up and did your thang. Furthermore when Michelle fell a big deal wasn’t made about it, and now that you’ve fell you don’t want anyone to see the video.

I realized that they were using the copyright defense to take the videos off YouTube when I was trying to get it to send to my friend. I’m fed up of these stars trying to dictate fans’ every move. We buy your music, we go to your concerts, we go to your movies, we buy your perfumes, we support your clothing lines - there is no need to continue to treat us like dirt. Sometimes the fans just want to have a little fun. Jeez, easy up on us!

I just want to say that everyone is being hard on Beyonce and her label. Even though we are glad she was ok and it really was no big deal, no one posting these comments are as famous as she is and has such
an image to uphold in the public. We all know how we feel if we merely stumble in front of people. It is one thing to fall but it is quite another to
tumble face first downa flight of stairs and have a jam packed audience see it Let alone to have some idiot post it all over the internet for the world to see. Most people wouldn’t have the courage to even stand
in front of that many people and perform, not to mention fall in front of them all and still manage to pull off a stellar performace. Maybe the label didn’t launch damage control for Michelle because maybe she didn’t want it. Plus, they have a valid point. NO VIDEO CAMERAS ALLOWED!!! Bottom line. They were at BET for a “taping” there was nothing that could be done about it. BET owned the rights to that. However, if it is illegal to come in there and tape her performance, fall or not, then B has every right to protect herself. Before people go blasting B and the label, maybe they should think about how they are nowhere near as famous as she is and how they would feel if the whole world had to see them fall. Illegally.
Or maybe they should know the law regarding tapings and performances before jumping to the conclusion that nothing was done for Michelle because of “who” she is. 106 and Park is taped live with BET holding the rights to that footage. The whole point that the label is trying to make is that no one had the right to post any footage of that show because there was never supposed to be any footage taken.
B keep ya head up and shake the hataz.
