Adobe Media Player Beta Released

Adobe today released their media player with a slate of publishing partners including CBS, PBS, Yahoo! Video, and Blip.tv.

I have mixed feelings from my test run of the player which is now available for download. At its most basic it’s a stand-alone player allowing higher quality playback of syndicated content built on Adobe’s AIR.

In terms of functionality and what it delivers, it’s not all that different from Miro’s player. RealNetworks tried a similar hub for content with SuperPass, a relatively unsuccessful subscription model that offered premium content.

There will be plenty more players like this for users to choose from if they’re not happy with web content hubs. The launch of AMP is really most important for its use of AIR, a platform for building applications outside the browser that offers greater interaction and a better user experience from the desktop.
